Recommended Resources

There are some products that I choose to use on a regular basis for the projects that I make and would like to recommend to you.

Click on the links below to explore more about these products and how they can be used in the Free Motion Machine Embroidery that you do.

Some of the companies that sell them have information that they’ve kindly allowed me to share with you, including how and when their products should be used.

 My favourite resources

  • I like to use Schmetz needles 130N for my Free Motion Machine Embroidery

A 130N Topstitch needle has a bigger eye and longer groove than other needles – the thread will move through the needle easier.

This needle can take thicker threads – up to 12wt

The point of the needle will go through thick layers of fabric and is therefore easier to use with more fabric layers, backing fabric, wadding etc.

  • I love using dissolvable fabric and chose to use Ultra Solvy for sewing things that are only made of thread.

I use Vilene products, especially Vliesofix adhesive fusible webbing.

  • I do a lot of thread work on my sewing machine and use many different kinds of threads. One of the main threads that I use are TOP Threads. These are 100% Viscose Rayon threads which come in spools of 3000 yards. They are great for layering stitches as they are fine, so there is less bulk build up. TOP threads come in lots of colours and shades, contact the supplier for more information. The only place that I can source these gorgeous threads from is Bestway Sewing Centre (Australia only). They have an online shop and a lovely retail store in Perth, Western Australia.

I also like using Amann Rasant threads when slightly thicker thread is needed. It is a core-spun Polycotton , which has the feel and look of cotton. It comes in many different colours and shades.

Mettler threads and Amann threads belong to the same company and there are many different threads to be used for different purposes. Each thread can produce a different effect on your projects. Again, these threads come in many different colours and shades.

  • My favourite brand of sewing machine is Bernina. I have three Bernina sewing machines, I have recently purchased a Bernina 480, which I love using. The other two machines are from the 1970s, one of which I have been sewing on for over 10 years. It is an 802 sport, and I’ve made many projects on it, some winning prizes.

  • I like using many different types of beads. I love to use crystals in both my machine and hand sewing. These always add 'bling and sparkle' to my work.

I also like to use pearls, especially in my Shibori Ribbon work.

I always keep a good supply of seed beads on hand, in many different sizes and colours. I prefer to use Japanese seed beads as the sizes are uniform and look great when I'm beading around the edges etc. of my work.

I keep a supply of different shaped beads and crystals on hand and love to have metallic beads and charms in my stash.

I can never have enough beads!!
